Description

Released in 1991, the Herb Ellis Signature ES-165 pays tribute to the legendary Texas guitar player who solidified his reputation playing in the Oscar Peterson Trio and Joe Pass Quartet - A-list gigs to be sure!

Based loosely around the original single-pickup ES-175's, the ES-165 has proven to be one of the most popular jazz guitars in Gibson's catalog. As a bonus, this 2nd year example is loaded with a Gibson PAF-style humbucker (newer versions are made with a floating pickup and aren't available with this pickup).

While only 27 years old, this guitar feels an awful lot like it was made in the 50s or 60s. There's a great, broken in feel that will certainly appeal to players looking to capture some of those vintage vibes that can be lacking in more modern Gibson's. The neck feels a touch like an ES-335 - slightly chunky but still sleek and fast.

With its single PAF humbucker and a master volume and tone, this style of guitar is all about you, the player, and your ideas, licks, and repertoire. To be sure single pickup guitars can be as versatile as anything, but it's up to you to coax different tones out of it - no doubt why these guitars are appealing to jazz players (this would make a fantastic blues guitar too, it should be noted).

Condition: Very good - light weather checking and marks scattered around the body, no major scratches or dings, the neck is straight and plays great. The guitar looks to have had a professional re-fret at some point in its life - medium jumbo wire, no wear. There's wear and patina on the gold hardware (which is to be expected).

This is a great playing, sounding, and looking Gibson archtop. It's sure to please fans of ES-175 style guitars! Priced with hardshell case.
