Phoenix Master Model Bluegrass (2006)

This is an incredible mandolin in very nice condition. Take the exceptional playability and wide open warmth of a Phoenix mandolin, and add "chop" approaching that of a strong bluegrass scroll F, and you'll have arrived at the Bluegrass Master Model. This is among the strongest 2-points you are likely to encounter. Rolfe carves and braces his top just a little bit heavier to achieve a thicker low-end tone and allow a heavy right-hand pick attack.

- 100+ year old European spruce top
- 1-3/16\" bone nut
- Radiused fingerboard
- Bound top, back, headstock & fingerboard
- Scooped fingerboard extension
- Internally-mounted contact pickup
- 100-year-old Maple bridge base

Martin D-45 Authentic 1942

The new Martin D-45 Authentic is a powerhouse guitar built to exacting specifications based on a 1942 D-45 that Martin now showcases in their Museum Collection. Only 91 of these were made orginally prior to WWII and they are the "Holy Grails" of the vintage guitar world. There's every good reason to project that these new Authentics will be equally coveted by tomorrow's collector.

The guitar has some interesting features that separate it from D-45's made in the last few decades. For one, Martin is using a slightly thinner Adirondack spruce top (.105" versus .120") with rear-shifted scalloped x-bracing while also thinning the rosewood backs just a bit. That and the 100% hot hide glue construction give these guitars an enormous tonal strength while keeping the overall resonance light and airy.

Other Authentic features are the ebony, non-adjustable truss rod, solid pearl inlays (no Abalam on these puppies), and premium, old-growth Brazilian back and sides. The beveled tortoise pickguard is applied under the thin nitrocellulose polished lacquer finish. Bridge pins, end pin, nut and saddle are all made from premium fossilized ivory.

All of these features and attention to minute details coalesce into one of the finest Martin reissues ever made. This guitar replicates the look, feel, sound, power and the essence of a pre-War Martin D-45.

List Price $59,999

Kevin Kopp Advanced Jumbo Madagascar

Kevin Kopp's Advanced Jumbos have been resounding successes with us here at TME--and not one has lasted more than a few days. This is the first one we've ever had in Madagascar Rosewood (Kevin is not taking orders for Brazilian guitars right now); and it's every bit as throaty and powerful as a guitar could be. This guitar resonates as much as a 60-year-old vintage Gibson, with perhaps more focus and clarity in the voice. The bass is thick, chunky and booming, and the trebles have glass-cutting snap. A world-class guitar, with gallons of tone and mojo. Priced with hard case.

Madagascar Rosewood
Adirondack Spruce
All hide glue
1 3/4" nut width
Standard Scale

Santa Cruz Style 1 Model

The Santa Cruz Style 1 is their most recently developed model, and we're sure it'll be a resounding hit. Essentially, it's a 12-fret 0-sized guitar, featuring Indian Rosewood back & sides and a Sitka Spruce top. Despite its small stature, it's a very loud guitar, and has pillowy softness in its midrange and lower register. The small body and standard neck profile make it an absolute joy to play, and it stands up to flatpicking and bare fingers equally well. Priced with hard case.

Indian Rosewood
Sitka Spruce
24.75" scale
1 3/4" nut width

Fairbanks Roy Smeck Adirondack Cocobolo

Our most recent addition from Fairbanks Guitars is this beastly take on a Roy Smeck model, in Cocobolo and Adirondack. This guitar has a huge, deep voice, with very dark, rich mids. You'd expect that it's a great strummer--and it is. But what's really fun is playing fingerstyle tunes and folkier singer-songwriter material on it--the guitar is extremely playable and blooms with sparkly, singing tone. Priced with custom-made Cedar Creek alligator-skin hard case.

Cocobolo back & sides
Adirondack Spruce
Adirondack bracing
All hide glue
Bone nut, bridge pins & saddle

More figured Koa goodness from the folks at Collings--an OM-42 featuring a Koa top over Koa back & sides. A stunningly well put together guitar, with a clear, complex and shimmery voice to match its visual appeal. The all-koa construction provides the warmth and mellowness of what an all-mahogany platform would provide, but punches it up in the bass department and adds sparkle throughout all the registers.
Arches FT Oval

An exciting new addition to our inventory, the all-american made Arches FT is constructed in the beautiful landscape of Southern Utah (hence the name). They offer an unprecedented value in mandolins. The top wood is beautiful Adirondack Red Spruce, prized for it's tone and rarely found in this price range. The back and sides are made from stunning maple. They use an induced arch top and back plate, not unlike the process pioneered on flattop guitars by the legendary Larson brothers.

The result is a very responsive mandolin with surprising volume for it's profile. It is evenly balanced with strong bass and round, clear trebles. It has that signature open sound that oval hole mandolins are known for, but still has enough "chop" to make it a versatile instrument for the beginning to intermediate player looking to try all kinds of styles. Easily the least expensive of our american-made mandolins, the fit and finish is quite simply impressive. Couple that with a nice hardshell case and an lifetime warranty, and you have one heck of a value in a fantastic mandolin!

$1199

pictured mandolin is not current stock

We're proud to host the prototype of singer/songwriter Ray Lamontagne's signature Bourgeois dreadnought here at TME. It's a beautifully made guitar, geared for a warm, natural tone with minimal overtone generation (it works great for vocalists). That's not to say it lacks volume or punch--it can really bark when you dig into it, and it's got enough headroom for anyone but the most heavy-handed flatpickers. Priced with hard case.

Mahogany back & sides
Sitka Spruce
1 23/32" nut width
Ziricote headstock veneer

Deering's "Golden Era" 5-string represents one of the builder's high-end options in the pre-war replica department. Ideally suited for bluegrass players who desire the thunderous midrange crackle, brilliant note separation and deeper bass of an old Mastertone, the Golden Era features a deeper air chamber and specially tapered resonator sides to increase volume and projection while retaining that signature hollow, woody punch.
Gibson L-00 (1933)

This wonderful player's Gibson L-00, from 1933, sports the ultra-cool black-finish-and-white-pickguard combination; and it's got the tone everyone's looking for. The guitar is in overall excellent condition: the back of the neck has possibly been oversprayed, and the tuners are replacements, but other than that, she's original. It's had at least one professional neck reset, and plays like a dream--light, lively and responsive all over the fingerboard. The sound is as dry as a bone, with no overtones and woody snap aplenty. The ideal fingerstyle blues box (but it takes a flatpick well, and wants for nothing in the volume department). Priced with hard case.

Just like a pre-war herringbone, this guitar is dry and woody sounding, with great snap and sparkle to the trebles--the ideal bluegrass guitar for rhythm and lead alike. A beautifully figured set of Brazilian Rosewood make this one all the more appealing. And as usual, this Merrill is priced with a deluxe Ameritage case.

Brazilian Rosewood
Adirondack Spruce
Hide Glue
1 3/4" nut width

Martin CS35-11 Custom

The Martin CS35-11 Custom Shop model is the best hot-rodded D-35 we've ever seen. The three-piece back's pattern has been modified with a wavy center strip of beautiful Madagascar Rosewood, and the top has been upgraded to Carpathian Spruce. The bracewood is Adirondack Spruce and the bridge and fingerboard are solid ebony. The CS35-11 also sports a custom neck profile: it's a round C-shape with plenty of depth but no sharpness at all. Very comfy and very quick-feeling. A quick A/B with an HD-35 tells the tale--this is a very sweet-sounding axe, with richness and power in the bass and incomparable power and clarity in the high end. Overall, a wonderful-sounding & great playing dread from the folks at Martin. Priced with Geib-style Custom Shop hard case.

Madagascar Rosewood back & sides
Carpathian Spruce top
Adirondack bracing
Hide Glue construction
1 11/16" nut width

John Walker Wise River

John Walker's "Wise River" model represents his interpretation of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought. This is an incredibly well-made guitar, with a clean, focused sound that's got power to spare and gorgeous decay for a mahogany guitar. Although it's modeled on a Gibson-style platform, the squared-off headstock complements the rest of the guitar's modernity quite nicely. The fit and finish is simply gorgeous, making this guitar extremely seductive in both looks and playability.
