Collings D1A 40th Anniversary Varnish
As 2008 marks The Music Emporium’s 40th year of operation, we have turned to one of the elite modern makers, Collings, commissioning a limited run of flattop guitars. For this past year we have been working with Collings to gather materials for these most exceptional guitars. Using only the very best tone woods available, Collings has pulled out all the stops, finishing each guitar in varnish and incorporating snakewood for the first - and likely, only - time in their history.
We have also asked our long-time friend and inlay master, Doug Unger, to design and inlay the peg head and fingerboard in mother-of-pearl, gold and abalone. The inlay is classically tasteful, highly detailed, and unlike anything you’ve ever seen on a Collings, or ever will again for that matter.
In short, these are tonally some of the best guitars Collings can build, accented with truly exquisite, one-of-a-kind details.
Each guitar will feature the following:
- Varnish Finish
- Adirondack tops & bracing
- Snakewood fingerboard, bridge and peghead veneer
- Snakewood binding for the body, fingerboard & peg head
- Abalone and Snakewood rosette
- 3-style backstrip with Snakewood
- Doug Unger peg head and fingerboard inlay in
Mother of Pearl, Abalone & Gold
- 1-3/4" nut with neck volute*
- Natural or Sunburst top
- Gold Waverly tuners
- Deluxe Geib-style hard-shell Case (Calton optional)
Hearty thanks to Bill, Bruce, Alex, and Steve at Collings, and a special thanks to Doug for his incredible inlay work.
Most of all, thanks to you for your continued support of this independent guitar shop. While we’ve seen many changes over the last four decades, one thing has remained constant: real people making real music, and in turn making everyone’s lives better and happier for it.
We’re grateful to continue to be a part of that experience for you.
